Start in the public Plaza and orient around the historic core. Use current town information for visitor centers, museums, tours, the Basilica of San Albino, markets, and events; access and hours can vary, and active civic or religious spaces should be treated as such.
Then walk a few surrounding blocks. Adobe walls, courtyards, storefronts, and short blocks make the historic core easy to examine on foot. Walk the Plaza and a few surrounding streets before settling into a shop or dining room.
The Town describes present-day Mesilla as carrying Native American, Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-American heritage. That layered identity is larger than a single outlaw anecdote or staged photo.
